The causes and treatments of Broken & Chipped Teeth

Broken & Chipped Teeth Causes
Your teeth may break for a number of reasons. These include:

  • An accident
  • Biting something hard
  • Clenching & grinding the teeth (Bruxism)

Broken & Chipped Teeth Treatments
Depending on the type and severity of the break we can fix the problem in a number of ways:

  • Polishing - minor 'crazing' can be ground out before this minor cracking worsens
  • Filling - a missing portion of the tooth can be re-sculptured using a tooth coloured bonding composite
  • Capping - Even very badly broken teeth can be saved.

Restoring Broken Teeth with a Dental Crown
As long as the root is healthy and securely held in the jaw it is generally better to save the tooth rather than extract it. In extreme cases we will cut the tooth off at the gum line and then hollow-out the roots. The roots are filled to prevent future decay.

 

A metal post can be cemented into the root and a new crown attached to it so that a whole new tooth is created.

Bruxism and Broken Teeth
Constantly clenching and grinding the teeth together can do a lot of damage. This frequently happens at night during sleep and the teeth can be subjected to extreme and unusual forces - far worse than they experience during ordinary biting and chewing.

 

Having a number of broken teeth can be a sign that the problem is caused by this condition. Where this is the case then simply restoring the teeth will only be a temporary measure. This destructive habit will soon damage even a new crown.

When we can see that bruxism is probably involved we can offer effective treatments to ensure the condition is alleviated.
