Cosmetic Dentistry Treatment for Gap Teeth

The causes and treatments of Gap Teeth

Causes of Gap Teeth
There are essentially three main reasons why you may have gaps between your teeth. These include:

  • You have teeth that are too small for the size of your jaw
  • You have a habit of pushing against your teeth with your tongue or of biting your lip.
  • You have a missing tooth

Treatments for Gap Teeth

Orthodontic Treatments for Gap Teeth
Orthodontics is the least invasive way of closing the gaps between your teeth. This involves having metal braces attached to your teeth which are tightened

progressively over a period of many months. Whereas this is seen as a normal part of growing up many adults are reluctant to wear braces. They generally also prefer a somewhat quicker solution.

We do not offer Orthodontic treatment. It requires frequent visits over a period of many months and because of this is not a suitable treatment to have overseas.

Cosmetic Bonding
Where the gap between the two teeth is very small we can close it using a tooth coloured bonding compound. This is a relatively cheap remedy, but not one we would recommend. Bonding compounds are more likely to stain than other available remedies and this is not in any case a long-term solution and will require reapplication after a while.

Dental Veneers
Veneers are without doubt the most frequently requested solution to the problem of gap teeth. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over the front surface of the tooth and can be used to close the gap between teeth. However, even veneers are of only limited effectiveness for very large gaps.

Using Crowns to Close Very Large Gaps
Your aim in wanting to close the gaps in your teeth is clearly to end up with an aesthetically pleasing smile. If you have very large gaps then the likelihood is that this is because your teeth are too small for your jaw. If order to provide you with an even set of front teeth it may be necessary to remodel your smile using crowns to so that we can change the apparent positioning and well as the width of your front teeth.

Closing Gaps Caused by Missing Teeth
There are two main ways we use to close a gap caused by a missing tooth

Dental Bridge
We can create a bridge from three dental crowns which are fixed together. The outer two crowns are fitted over the two teeth that adjoin the space left by the missing tooth. The third crown (pontic) is then held in place in the gap. It looks and functions as if you had a new tooth.

Dental Implant
We can completely restore a missing tooth using a dental implant. This is an artificial root that is set into the jaw bone and to which a new crown is attached.
